The Art of Being- A Balancing Act Amidst Chaos

21 Aug

balance

Hi readers!  Long time no talk.. Seriously, it’s been like a million years since I’ve touched my blog… Do people even read blogs anymore?  It doesn’t matter, because if you’re reading this, it means they do…

So here’s a topic I’ve  been constantly scratching my head on.. “The Art of Being.” What does that mean? In my opinion, it means understanding the chaos of existence, embracing the beauty of it’s untamed demeanor, and  knowing how to make peace with it- a balancing act.

Myself, along with many friends are constantly trying to find ways to handle life’s craziness. Let’s admit it, we all struggle with insecurities, fear, anxiety, and depression… And like a creepy little gremlin, those feelings have way of randomly stalking and haunting.

We’ve all struggled (I know I have) with  personal drama, death,  inadequacy, relationship problems, breakups, family tragedies, financial challenges & social pressure- and amidst all that pain, the mind and heart goes through a real beating. Some of us respond by simply saying, stay strong and be grateful. Really though, beyond just saying that, amidst all of our challenges, how do we keep our head & heart healthy (void of resentment, insecurities, extreme anxiety, depression, and fear)?

Here’s a personal list that I have been trying to practice… It continues to help me when times get rough, so I hope it helps others!

  1. Find a network of people that really see the beauty in you; and express (y)ourself to that network. God made each one of us beautiful and unique; and our purpose differs from one another. Find people who recognize your purpose. Warning though, keep a distance from people who take pleasure in objectifying others. If you can find a healthy network of people, share yourself.  Our emotions are what connects us to one another. We are all experiencing challenges, so don’t be shy to express yourself- it not only makes us more relate-able, but by internalizing your emotions you’re like an isolated time-bomb, waiting to implode.  Get rid of all your toxins by literally letting them out of your system- talk it out! Your friends will also appreciate the fact that you trust them with your vulnerability.
  2. Learn to let go.  Going along with #1, it’s one thing to spew your toxins out, but it’s another to truly let go of it.  Learn to understand that life is all about the art of letting go, loving, and evolving.  We are all connected, but in order to be free, we must learn to let go of the past and move forward.
  3. Trust the system– have faith.  Whether you believe in G-d or a greater Entity, know that you are part of a greater plan. Have faith, and the results of (y)our existence will reap beauty.
  4.  Seek happiness in the subtle things in life.  I literally keep a daily journal and write out all the things that make me feel good, as subtle as it might be, writing it out helps me absorb the information on a daily basis- to the point where it’s etched in my mind all day.
  5. gratitudeRecognize humanity and share yourself with others. It feels good to be needed and appreciated, and to help be part of someone’s else’s well being. It makes (y)our existence more productive.
  6. Physically, mentally, and spiritually challenge yourself- seriously, create a bucket list of goals that will help you open your heart and mind.  For example, conquer your fear of heights, learn a new language, dance to loud  music, explore the World and it’s people.
  7. Create a daily routine that ignites your body & mind to feel and heal- pray, meditate, exercise.
  8. Put yourself first.  It’s not selfish. How else can you nourish your environment if you are not nourished.
  9. Give hugs– just because it feels good :).

By practicing these rituals, I am learning how to keep everything in perspective while jiving with the universe’s natural chaos.

Let me know if you can think of anything else that helps!

DIY: (Creative) All-Natural Summer Beauty Tips

29 Apr

Organic Beauty

Time to get out of hibernation mode!  When Summer rolls around, I’m all about bringing vibrant colors back in to my appearance and wardrobe (full-force). Summer is an opportunity to express oneself in an ultra creative way.  From bronzed skin, to highlighted hair, we naturally gain more vibrancy (physically and emotionally :P)…  During this time, I find myself happier, more outgoing, and wearing less heavy material… And just like everyone else, I’d like my skin and body to glow.

Rather than run to the drugstore or beauty counter and load up with expensive and chemically loaded products, use natural products that are not only fresher, but multi-functional (from appearance to health).

Here are a few DIY tips from the kitchen:

Get the glow & the body:

Healthy diets rich in fruits & vegetables not only help weight loss, but may reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. They provide essential vitamins and minerals, fiber, and other substances that are important for good health and amazing skin. Most fruits and vegetables are naturally low in fat and calories and are filling- if bland taste is an issue, simply include, cheese and/or garlic for a dose of zest.

My night time routine consists of massaging my body with coconut oil- it’s packed with essential fatty acids and iron.. The combination helps improve skin, metabolism, hair growth, and fertility. Also, massaging your body does wonders for the muscles and state of mind. The body responds very positively- physically & emotionally .

Get the beach highlighted hair:

Lemon & chamomile tea are components to a tasty drink—but they also happen to be natural hair treatment ingredients for highlights. After washing your hair, rinse your hair with chamomile tea, or apply lemon juice; with a bit of sun exposure, your hair will naturally lighten.

Get the fresh face look:

Cucumbers are yummy, but their also the most natural eye pads you can find for yourself.  Cucumber and the skin share the same level of hydrogen, so it becomes easier for cucumber to mask all the problem areas, from under eye circles, to puffiness.

My night routine consists of applying cucumbers over my eyes and applying a face mask by Lush.  The masks are made with fresh, natural ingredients.  They are personally made and packaged, so you know what your putting on your face has no artificial chemicals. I like to switch between masks on a daily basis. I’ swear by this, the mask does wonders!

Before going to sleep, I love drinking chamomile tea with cinnamon sticks.  The combination is a powerful anti-oxidant duo. Cinnamon’s antioxidant levels are comparable with other high-antioxidant foods. With it’s anti-inflammatory and anti-septic properties, chamomile helps in not only skin irritations but allergies too.

Get hydrated:

Water, water, water.  Water is the most hydrating liquid you can depend on.  It nourishes skin, weight loss (it’s filling, and no calories at all), and energizes the muscles.

Although the title of this says “Summer”, in order to see the best results, these natural treatments should be used year around.  The answer to a looking better and living better is literally found in our backyard.

If These Walls Could Talk

23 Dec

As I read about the construction behind the MET’s  Alhambra palace courtyard, I’m fascinated by the precision and creativity behind tile designs of historic Islamic architecture.

Stemming from its birth, Islamic art has revolved around geometric & calligraphy patterns.  Geometric patterns signify a deep and reflective form of art; one that makes us ponder the meaning of our connectivity.  Instead of exploiting the human body, the essence of Islamic art revolves around lines, algorithms, and thought-provoking abstract forms. The same can be said about the use of classical Arabic used in sacred scripture.

I am forever inspired by the skill, patience, and creativity of tile patterns & Islamic/Eastern Art. The walls of these historic sites symbolize the length of our human potential; an endless potential that has always existed since the beginning of time.  Enjoy the following work that can be found in Spain, Uzbekistan, Pakistan & Iran (Photography from: http://www.islamic-arts.org).

The Art of Style

7 Nov

Happy Friday!  Here are some fun style ideas I grabbed from Pinterest .  Art translates itself in so many different ways, one being fashion.  Style carries with it self-expression, culture, and a personal story.  I’m a true believer of self expression, and not following any trends but your own.  Style transcends beyond what we wear and how we wear it. Leading me to say, true style goes well beyond labels and trends. Here are some examples of traditional Eastern wear mixed with a unique dose of self expression.

4 Steps to Feng Shui

Our home is our haven.  Our home is where the heart is.  And the heart should be tranquil.  Here are some quick and easy tips to sustain some feng shui in your living space.

1. Keep the clutter to a minimum:

The less the more.  To be amidst clutter can rob us of breathable air, and create too many distractions.

2. Keep windows open, ventilate the rooms:

Fresh air and ventilation reminds us that nature is on our side. It also rejuvenates the body and mind.  While taking a shower or bath, keep the windows open so the air can eliminate any mold build-up.

3. Wipe down windows and tables:

They say that the door is the mouth to the room, and the windows are the eyes. To keep the breathable air fresh, eliminate dust by simple swiping and polishing your furniture.  Swipe down tables, windows, and doors to maintain a crisp and breathable space.

4. Light up the room with candles:

There’s something so whimsical and calming about having scented candles lit.  While meditating or resting, candles provide an aromatherapy that helps calm our minds and awaken our senses.

Can you think of any other ideas for sustaining some feng shui?

Defining Good & Bad- It’s Not as Simple as You Think.

18 Oct
Big Bang

Big Bang

A topic that I have always been really fascinated by has been the nature of good and bad… “You can’t taste the sweet without the bitter” “There is no good without evil”, these famous quotes provoke us to question our judgements in a particular situation. At a fundamental level, I personally believe everything is relative. Unless we speak of  God or an infallible saint, there is no pure good or bad in the universe. Everything is simply “just is”. Good or bad is based on the outcome and the one perceiving it. Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so is good and bad.

Through Good Comes Bad; Through Bad Comes Good:
At times, what we may consider bad, can bring good results. At times, a great good can bring bad results. For example, when a person commits a good deed (charity, selfless deed) but boasts about it, their ego inflates, as a result, a bad outcome has resulted from the good deed. A terrible break in relationship, a tragedy, or a bad choice could lead someone to achieve greater wisdom, enlightenment and strength, thus, through the bad came good.

Good & Evil- It’s All Relative:
Another situation to consider, what can be considered good or evil in the universe is whether it satisfies the needs of all or not. Sometimes one must satisfy the needs of themselves before satisfying the need of others.
Therefore caring for oneself and caring for others is ultimately the same. We are all one being. In essence, we and others are the same. The evil we do to others is the evil we do to ourselves and the good we do to ourselves is the good we do to others. In essence, the good we do to ourselves, will inevitably bring out the best of our environment.

After much thought, I have found peace in the idea of embracing a broader outlook in life. Goodness and evil are measurements that require a broader lens. Happenstance can not be taken for granted. Our choices  require sincere thought, because for every action there is a  greater reaction.

The point and question we should ask ourselves is- has the “good” in you brought out the “best” or “worst” in others?

The Story Behind the Paintings

7 Sep

If you’ve followed dab on instagram, then you’d know that there’s always a painting or design in progress.  The story behind all these designs have less to do with business and more to do with experiences.  I started investing in art at an early age.  For me, art has always been about self-expression.

One of my favorite feelings that I enjoy illustrating would be love. In it’s essence, love goes beyond the physical.  Love has no prejudice or restriction . One of my recent abstracts illustrate two people embracing.  These two people could be lovers, friends, a parent, sibling, or relative.  Through shapes and colours, I tried to illustrate the vulnerability love instigates amongst people.
