Summer Detox- 3 Natural Ways to Improve Your Skin, Mind & Body.

For a 29-year-old, like myself, I am well aware of the advantages and disadvantage of age.  Funny enough, I find myself healthier now then ever… What’s my secret?  Well, it’s not a secret, but the answer is: staying active and trying to relax.  I’m a personal believer that with age, a person can easily appear healthier….

Flipping through women’s magazines, such as Cosmopolitan, Glamour, or Allure-  expensive skin care products are advertised left and right to improve the condition of skin and body… Personally, I feel as though most of those products are no different then the generic brand ointments & lotions.  Many people jump to buying expensive products without considering the more natural and easy ways of detoxifying.

With Summer coming, here are some natural and cost efficient ways to detox- resulting in better skin and a peace of mind:

1.  Feel good by sweating and letting the natural oils take place:

Enjoy being under the sun, go to a sauna, lay by the beach- sweating rids the body and skin of toxins. It is a good habit that pays many health dividends. It is also believed that exposure of the skin to heat stimulates the production of white blood cells and strengthens the immune system.  After sweating so much, enjoy a nice dip in cold water, whether it be in a beach or in the shower.

2. Breath more:

Acne and wrinkles don’t arrive just because of oily skin or age, a lot of times, acne and wrinkles are stress induced.  When we are stressed, our body physically starts to look WORN OUT… By simply taking more deep breaths, we rid our body of such tension.  Breathing raises the level of oxygen in our blood- improving, relaxation, sleep,  blood pressure, energy, and circulation.  Here are some popular activities to help pace your breathing- Prayer/Meditation, swimming, exercising.  I also noticed that a heated room or sauna helps people relax, slowly deep breath, and sweat…..

Whatever is more accessible to you, be it your desk, gym, or a prayer room, just remember to BREATH.

3.  Eat fruits and vegetables:

During the Spring and Summer, we see more fresh fruits and vegetables… Enjoy eating them!  Also drink lots of water.  All the vitamins and water help rejuvenate your body.

Remembering Chernobyl- 25th Anniversary

The 25th of April marked the 25th anniversary of the  nuclear catastrophe in Chernobyl.  This year, the world has seen Japan suffer of a similar catastrophe within its major tsunami disaster.  Nuclear energy might be convenient, but when unpredictable disasters strike, these plants can cause major damages… The damages are long-term; discreet but deadly…  I’m hoping the world doesn’t increase the number of plants given the rise of natural disasters.

Summer Fever After Spring Cleaning: For the Mind, Body, and Soul

As the days get sunnier and warmer; the flowers blossom, the birds chirp, people laugh, children cheer- the atmosphere transitions to a more positive vibe.  It’s time to get out of hermit mode; time to get out of the cave and into the light.

The new weather inspires us to change not only our mood, but also our daily habits, style, and living.  Here’s a list to help inspire that change:

1. SPRING CLEAN:  In your living space-  open the windows, let the fresh air in. Play some up beat music.  Sweep out the dust and polish up your shelves… Empty out your closets… Spray the air and sheets with a floral scent.

2. DONATE:  When Emptying your closets, don’t throw everything away.  Anything that is too small, big, or simply takes up space, DONATE IT.

3. Dis-CONNECT:  Unplug the tv.  Get use to shutting your laptops.  GET OUTSIDE!  Make Spring and Summer the memorable seasons they are.  Plan outings, play outside; turn the bbq on…. Get your Summer on!

4. LIVE IN COLOR:  Spice up your wardrobe.  I’m not saying buy a new wardrobe… Keep your t-shirts, tanks, and dresses basic… You need to be saving money for memorable trips…. Invest in small accessories that lighten up your style and living space…. Lighter sheets… Lighter lip color…. Bold color accessories….. Have fun with color.

5. EVENT PLAN: Plan weekly/monthly events for the Spring and Summer… Picnics,  charity drives, sports games, coffee outings with your friends… Keep yourself productively active.  The sun brings out the best in us.

6. A WALK IN THE PARK:  Take a stroll in the park. Sit in the park.. Eat in the park.. Play in the park… Read in the park… People watch in the park… need I say more?

For my East coast people, remember, we are only graced with a couple of months of Spring and a few months of Summer…. MAKE THE BEST OF IT!

This is sooo upsetting! Although the book, Three Cups of Tea,  has inspired the world to promote education, the inaccuracies of the reports brings much dismay.

Inspiring Serenity in the Atmosphere- Islamic Art & Architecture

This evening, I had relaxed with my friend (who is married with a daughter) at her place.  I couldn’t help but admire their living space.  Their home is decorated with a warm decor, cushions, modern pieces mixed with oak-wood furnishing. Above all, I loved the fact that her living space was very spacious and serene.  The element that brought warmth and awe were her walls.  The room’s walls are decorated with an array of Islamic art.  This brought us to touch base on a fine topic:  Islamic architecture .

Islamic architecture compliments a blank and spacious base.  The spacious base sets the tone for prayer and meditation.  Dim lit lamps and lanterns bring serenity into the night.  Interiors are often decorated with ceramic tiles in continuous, geometric patterns on the floors and walls. Decorative elements include Islamic calligraphy which allow patterns of spiritual text to decorate the interior walls. Simple cushions, rugs and textiles bring colour and texture to rooms which often have few pieces of furniture.

The key elements to Islamic architecture is calligraphy, lighting and open space.  Islamic art and architecture has been the inspiration behind my living space, and it had definitely worked for my friend’s home.   I hope Islamic art gets more recognition.  More homes and halls would look better with some spiritual inspiration.
